The language was created by Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto, who started working at Ruby on February 24, 1993, and presented it to the public in 1995. In Matsumoto's circle of friends, Ruby was named (in Ruby Spanish) as a joke alluding to the programming language Perl (pearl in English). The last stable version of branch 1.8 is 1.8.7_p248, branch 1.9 is 1.9.2_p180. The version in 1.9 that incorporates substantial improvements in the performance of the language, which are expected to be reflected in the next stable version of language production, Ruby 1.9.0.1 Differences in performance between the current implementation of Ruby (1.8.6) and other languages of more ingrained programming have led to the development of several virtual machines for Ruby.

Among those is JRuby, an attempt to bring Ruby to the Java platform, and Rubinius, a modeled interpreter based on Smalltalk virtual machines. The main developers have supported the virtual machine provided by the YARV project, which was merged into the Ruby source code tree on December 31, 2006, and became known as Ruby 1.9.
