Download Gimp
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a
program for editing digital images in the form of a bitmap, both drawings and
photographs. It is a free and free program. It is part of the GNU project and
is available under the GNU General Public License and GNU Lesser General Public
License1
It is the graphics manipulation program
available in most operating systems (Unix, GNU / Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris,
Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, among others).
The GIMP interface is available in several
languages, including: Spanish, English (the original language), Catalan,
Galician, Basque, German, French, Italian, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Korean
and Dutch.
GIMP has tools that are used for retouching
and editing images, drawing free shapes, resizing, trimming, making
photomontages, converting to different image formats, and other more
specialized tasks. You can also create animated images in GIF format and
animated images in MPEG format using an animation plugin.
The developers and those in charge of
maintaining GIMP strive to maintain and develop a graphic application of free,
high-quality software for the editing and creation of original images,
photographs, icons, graphic elements of web pages as well as artistic elements
of user interface.
Features
1. GIMP is an image manipulation program
that has evolved significantly over time. It has been supporting additional
formats, its tools are more powerful, and it is also capable of working with
extensions or plugins and scripts. For a long time it can also be used with
digitizing tablets.
2. GIMP uses GTK + as a library of graphic
controls. Actually, GTK + was simply at first a part of GIMP, originated by
replacing the Motif commercial library used initially in the first versions of
GIMP. GIMP and GTK + were originally designed for the X Window graphic system
executed on Unix operating systems. GTK + has been ported to Microsoft Windows,
OS / 2, Mac OS X and SkyOS.
3. GIMP allows the treatment of images in
layers, in order to modify each object of the image completely independently of
the other elements in other layers of the image. The layers can also be raised
or lowered in a stack to facilitate the work of the image. Each layer has its
own visibility and degree of transparency and, in addition, there is a long
series of ways to combine the relationships between layers. The final image can
be saved in the original format xcf of GIMP that supports layers, or in many
flat formats without layers, such as png, bmp, jpg, GIF, PDF, etc.
4. With GIMP it is also possible to produce
images in a totally non-interactive automated way (for example, generate on the
fly images for a web page using scripts or CGI scripts) and also perform a
batch processing that changes the color or converts series of images. For
simpler automation tasks, it's probably faster to use a package like
ImageMagick.
5. The name of GIMP in Spanish is formed
with the initials of GNU's Image Manipulation Program, read from back to front.
Supported formats
GIMP reads and writes most of the graphic file formats, among them; JPG, GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, bmp, pix and also most of the psd (from Photoshop) as well as having its own open file storage format, the XCF. It is also capable of importing and exporting files in pdf and postcript (ps). It also imports vector images in SVG format created, for example, with Inkscape. Gimp also writes and reads images in ora format (OpenRaster format, open binary format), which makes it easy to transfer graphics, for example, with Krita, another open-source graphics editing program.
